Workshop weekend!

Tomorrow, September 23, is the Design Theory workshop with Jennifer Laing.

The workshop will be at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, 3700 E. Mt. Vernon (just east of Hillside on Mt. Vernon), from 9:30-4:00. Lunch (pizza) will be provided.

Bring: Ideas! Photo clippings, sketches, notes on the animal you plan to design. Animal anatomy books are useful (I have some) for unusual animals. Notepad, pencil, eraser, ruler, and paper scissors. Mohair and ultrasuede you plan to use, if you have it. Ziplock plastic bags for pattern pieces.

Sunday, September 24 will be the Makeover workshop.

Since the church is (oddly enough) in use in the morning, this workshop has been moved to ::Lori Casey's house.

Bring: Sewing kit, doll needles, upholstery thread in paw-matching shades. Heads to be made over (or completed bears). Matching scraps of mohair and ultrasuede, if possible, and flesh-colored ultrasuede. Fiberfill. A range of eye sizes, including test eyes. Clear glass eyes for painting. Nail polishes in brown, green, gold, etc. Perle cotton in #3 and #5, brown and black. Small pieces of thin black leather and white ultrasuede. A sheet of black sticky-backed felt. Artificial sinew/eye floss. Pipe cleaners. Polymer clay in black (claws) or translucent white (teeth) if desired. Permanent pens (Prismacolor, Copic, etc.) in a range of warm greys, browns, flesh tones.

There is, as far as I know, still room for walk-ins, but ideally you should give us a call first... though at worst, we won't have enough pizza for you.

Jennifer Laing workshops

The Jennifer Laing workshops are coming up in a couple of weeks, and there are still openings in both of them. You need not be a Guild member to attend.

Saturday, September 23 is the Design Theory Workshop, and Sunday, September 24 is the Makeover Workshop. The all-day workshops are only $100 each - Judy Hager has generously subsidized them for us.

Contact Lori Casey at 722-6334 with any questions.

October Meeting

The next meeting will be on October 3, 7-9 pm at the Downtown Senior Center (the usual location).

Even though it's early in the month, this meeting will be the annual Halloween party. Feel free to bring treats (Joy says they have to be black and/or orange) and/or decorations (Andy will doubtless have Spiderweb Barbie again), along with the usual - bears for Show'n'Share, and money for the GBW auction.

September Meeting Recap

Bottle Cap Pendants - Fronts Bottle Cap Pendants - Backs

Lori Casey brought her 1" button maker and taught us how to make bottle cap pendants for our bears (or for ourselves) - above are front and back view of several Lori has made.

BearClub1

Lori, Cottie Black, and Judy Hager (l to r) are shown making buttons to put in the bottlecaps.

Cottie Bears - Front

Cottie Black showed us some of her bears, wearing a slightly different sort of bottle cap pendant. Click the image to see a larger version - the bears match their vintage bottle caps. The fronts of the pendants can be seen here.

Andy Bear

Andy McEntire brought her magnetic-snap bear - he took not only a blue ribbon, but Best Of Show as well. Congratulations, Andy! The guild members will all be making magnetic-snap bears like this, and exchanging limbs at the February 2007 meeting - no word yet on whether Andy's going to "part out" her prizewinning bear.
